Netanyahu Under Fire After Report Claims UAE Warned Him of October 7 Hamas Attack

Netanyahu Faces Fresh Political Pressure Over Alleged October 7 Warning

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing renewed political pressure after a report by Haaretz alleged that United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed (MBZ) warned him about a planned major Hamas operation shortly before the October 7, 2023 attack.

The report has triggered strong reactions from Israeli opposition leaders, who are demanding Netanyahu’s resignation and calling for a state commission of inquiry into the alleged failure to act on the warning.

The claims, however, remain disputed. Netanyahu’s office has categorically rejected the report, describing it as “an absolute lie” and denying that any such conversation with the UAE president took place.

The controversy adds another layer to Israel’s long-running debate over accountability for the devastating security failure surrounding the October 7 Hamas attack.

What Did the UAE Allegedly Warn Netanyahu About?

According to the Haaretz investigation, MBZ allegedly spoke with Netanyahu during a 45-minute phone call approximately 10 days before October 7, 2023.

The report claims that the UAE president conveyed information indicating that then-Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was preparing a major operation against Israel.

The alleged warning reportedly described the planned action as something resembling an “earthquake”, suggesting that it could be significantly more serious than the type of escalation Israeli authorities had anticipated.

The information was reportedly obtained through Palestinian intermediaries who maintained contacts with both Hamas and Israeli officials.

According to reports surrounding the investigation, information about Hamas preparations had also reached Israel’s Shin Bet around the middle of September 2023.

These claims have intensified questions over what Israeli political and security officials knew before October 7 and how that information was assessed.

Did Netanyahu Dismiss the Warning?

The Haaretz account alleges that Netanyahu told MBZ that Hamas was primarily focused on developments in the West Bank rather than preparing for a large-scale attack from Gaza.

The report further claims that Netanyahu assured the UAE president that Israel was prepared to deal with any threat.

Most significantly, according to the investigation, Netanyahu allegedly did not relay the specific warning to the heads of Israel’s security establishment.

If independently established, such an account could raise serious questions about the decision-making process at the highest level of Israel’s government before the October 7 attack.

However, there is currently a major dispute over whether the alleged Netanyahu-MBZ conversation happened at all.

Netanyahu’s Office Denies the Report

Netanyahu’s office has strongly rejected the allegations.

The Prime Minister’s Office reportedly stated that the claim was “an absolute lie”, maintaining that Netanyahu did not speak with MBZ during the relevant period and did not receive such a warning.

The denial directly contradicts the account published by Haaretz.

That leaves a central question at the heart of the controversy: Did the UAE president actually warn Netanyahu about an impending Hamas attack before October 7, 2023?

The answer could have significant implications for the continuing investigation into Israel’s security and political leadership before the attack.

Israeli Opposition Demands Netanyahu’s Resignation

The report has generated an immediate political response from Netanyahu’s opponents.

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett publicly endorsed the reported account, saying that the report was true and accusing Netanyahu of “criminal negligence.”

Bennett argued that if the warning was received and not properly communicated to Israel’s security leadership, the alleged failure would represent an extremely serious lapse in national security decision-making.

Other opposition figures have also intensified their criticism.

Yair Golan reportedly argued that the allegations demonstrate Netanyahu is “unfit to serve” and called for his removal from office.

Opposition leaders are also demanding a state commission of inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the October 7 security failure.

Why the Allegation Matters

The October 7 Hamas attack exposed major weaknesses in Israel’s intelligence and security systems. Hamas fighters breached the Gaza-Israel barrier, attacked Israeli communities and military positions, and took hostages.

The scale and impact of the attack triggered widespread questions about how Israeli authorities failed to anticipate or prevent the assault.

Israeli intelligence agencies had reportedly detected indications of unusual Hamas activity before October 7. The latest allegations, if substantiated, could introduce another critical element into the debate: whether senior political leadership received an external warning about a potentially massive Hamas operation and failed to act on it.

That distinction is important.

An intelligence warning does not necessarily mean an attack can be predicted with certainty. Governments routinely receive incomplete or conflicting intelligence, and determining the credibility and urgency of a warning can be extremely difficult.

Nevertheless, if a specific warning about a large-scale Hamas operation reached the prime minister shortly before the attack, investigators would likely examine what Netanyahu understood, what actions he ordered and whether the information was communicated to the appropriate security officials.

Political Consequences Could Be Significant

The controversy comes at a sensitive time for Israeli politics, with accountability for October 7 remaining one of the country’s most divisive political issues.

For Netanyahu, the allegations create another challenge to his leadership at a time when his government continues to face intense scrutiny over the handling of national security and the consequences of the Hamas attack.

For the opposition, the reported UAE warning provides another argument for an independent investigation into whether political decisions contributed to the failure to prevent or mitigate the attack.

The political impact will ultimately depend on whether evidence emerges confirming or disproving the alleged conversation and warning.

What Happens Next?

The dispute is likely to fuel calls for greater transparency over communications between Israel and the UAE before October 7.

Investigators could potentially examine diplomatic records, intelligence assessments, communication logs and testimony from Israeli and foreign officials to determine whether the reported warning was delivered.

Until such evidence is independently established, the central claim remains an allegation reported by Haaretz and firmly denied by Netanyahu’s office.

What is already clear is that the controversy has reopened a fundamental question surrounding the October 7 attack: What did Israel’s leadership know before Hamas launched its assault, and what was done with that information?

As investigations and political debates continue, answers to those questions could have lasting consequences for Netanyahu’s political future and for Israel’s approach to national security oversight.
