Marnus Labuschagne Retains Australia Test Spot for South Africa Tour 2026 Despite Poor Form

Marnus Labuschagne Retains Australia Test Spot for South Africa Tour 2026 Despite Poor Form

Marnus Labuschagne Retains His Place in Australia’s Test Squad

Marnus Labuschagne has retained his place in Australia’s 16-man Test squad for the upcoming South Africa Test series 2026, despite mounting concerns over his prolonged run of poor form.

The experienced right-hander remains Australia’s preferred option at No. 3 after selectors decided against making a major change to the team’s batting order. Labuschagne has not scored a Test century since July 2023 and recently managed scores of just 1, 31 and 4 across three innings against Bangladesh.

His continued selection is therefore one of the biggest talking points surrounding the Australia Test squad for South Africa 2026.

Why Is Marnus Labuschagne Still in Australia’s Test Squad?

Australia’s selectors have chosen experience and continuity over an immediate change at No. 3.

Chief selector George Bailey acknowledged the team’s batting struggles but maintained that Labuschagne can still make a positive contribution. More importantly, the selectors do not believe there is currently an obvious replacement who has done enough to take over one of the most important positions in Australia’s Test batting lineup.

Labuschagne has also been a long-term fixture at first drop. Since establishing himself during the 2019 Ashes, he has effectively made Australia’s No. 3 position his own, with Cameron Green the only other current Australian batter to have made multiple appearances in that role.

That history appears to have influenced the selectors’ decision to give him another opportunity.

Labuschagne’s Test Form Raises Questions

While his selection provides continuity, Marnus Labuschagne’s Test form remains a significant concern.

His most recent Test century came in July 2023, when he scored a match-saving 111 against England in Manchester. Since then, his returns have fallen well below the standards he established earlier in his career.

According to Cricket Australia, Labuschagne has averaged only 24.69 across his last 43 Test innings since that century. His latest scores against Bangladesh 1, 31 and 4 have only intensified questions about whether he can rediscover his best form.

The decision is particularly interesting because Labuschagne was recently dropped from Australia’s ODI squad for the Zimbabwe and South Africa tour. However, selectors have stressed that ODI and Test selection are considered separately.

This means his omission from the ODI setup does not necessarily indicate a lack of confidence in his Test ability.

Australia’s 16-Man Test Squad for South Africa

Australia will travel to South Africa with a strong 16-player squad led by captain Pat Cummins.

The Australia Test squad 2026 includes:

  • Pat Cummins (captain)
  • Scott Boland
  • Alex Carey
  • Cooper Connolly
  • Cameron Green
  • Josh Hazlewood
  • Travis Head
  • Josh Inglis
  • Matthew Kuhnemann
  • Marnus Labuschagne
  • Nathan Lyon
  • Michael Neser
  • Matthew Renshaw
  • Steve Smith
  • Mitchell Starc
  • Beau Webster

Cooper Connolly, Matthew Kuhnemann and Michael Neser are the additions to an otherwise largely unchanged group from Australia’s recent Test squad.

Matthew Renshaw has also retained his place after returning to the Test side as a replacement for Jake Weatherald. His inclusion adds another option to Australia’s top order, although Labuschagne remains the preferred No. 3 option for now.

Australia vs South Africa Test Series 2026

The upcoming Australia vs South Africa Test series 2026 will consist of three matches and is scheduled to begin on October 9.

The Test schedule is:

First Test: October 9–13 Kingsmead, Durban
Second Test: October 18–22 St George’s Park, Gqeberha
Third Test: October 27–31 Newlands, Cape Town

The series forms part of the World Test Championship and will be a major test for both teams.

The tour also carries historical significance for Australia. It will mark the return of Australia’s Test team to South Africa since the infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal. Only five players from that tour remain in the current squad: Cummins, Hazlewood, Smith, Starc and Renshaw.

South Africa Tour Could Be Crucial for Labuschagne

The South Africa Test tour 2026 could represent a critical opportunity for Labuschagne to revive his international career.

Although his recent numbers have been disappointing, selectors have clearly decided that he deserves another chance. The conditions in South Africa could provide an important test of his technique, concentration and ability to handle high-quality pace bowling.

Interestingly, Labuschagne was born in Klerksdorp, South Africa, before moving with his family to Brisbane in 2004. He subsequently developed through Queensland’s cricket system and became one of Australia’s leading Test batters.

A strong performance in his country of birth could therefore have significance beyond simply improving his statistics.

For Australia, the bigger question is whether experience will eventually translate into runs.

Can Marnus Labuschagne Silence His Critics?

The decision to retain Labuschagne places the spotlight firmly on the Australian batter.

There is little doubt that Australia still values his experience, resilience and knowledge of Test cricket. However, with younger players such as Cooper Connolly entering the squad, the pressure on established players is increasing.

For Labuschagne, the message from the selectors appears clear: the opportunity remains, but he must convert it into performances.

If he can rediscover the form that once made him one of Australia’s most dependable Test batters, his selection will look like a smart decision. If the struggles continue in South Africa, however, Australia’s selectors may face a much more difficult decision ahead of the next stage of the World Test Championship.

For now, Labuschagne has survived another selection test. The next test will come in the middle.
